In 2011, Nintendo released the Swapnote app on the 3DS eShop, which was called Nintendo Letter Box in Europe. Related: 3DS and Wii U Eshop Is Shutting Down In 42 Countries It wasn't until the Nintendo 3DS that Nintendo really managed to get a handle on its online outings, especially when coupled with the much-missed StreetPass service that let people share data when passing other 3DS users on the street. Nintendo's online outings for its handheld systems technically started with the DS, but the online connectivity of the DS was awful. The Nintendo 3DS had some amazing apps, but one of its best had a sad ending, as horrific real-life actions resulted in the death of Swapnote.
